‘Big Little Lies’ Season 2 Will Move Forward W…

awardscircuit:

Almost from the moment the credits rolled on “Big Little Lies,” fans started begging for more.

The HBO limited series, based on the novel by Liane Moriarty, won 8 Primetime Emmys in September, including Outstanding Limited Series, Actress (Nicole Kidman), Supporting Actress (Laura Dern), Supporting Actor (Alexander Skarsgård), and Directing (Jean-Marc Vallée). There were also nominations for Lead Actress Reese Witherspoon and Supporting Actress Shailene Woodley, among others.

“Big Little Lies” was a soapy limited series that followed the lives of mothers in Monterey, California. Their common connection is through their children, who are all in the same first grade class. The series also spins a murder mystery in which the identities of both the killer and the victim were withheld until the film moments of the finale.

Reese Witherspoon, who also executive produced the series, teased for months that there might be a second season. A notion that author Moriarty fully embraced.

Director Jean-Marc Vallée, however, saw things differently. Speaking about the series back in the spring, he said:
“…this is the perfect ending. There is no way; there’s no reason to make a season two. That was meant to be a one-time deal, and it’s finishing in a way where it’s for the audience to imagine what can happen. If we do a season two, we’ll break that beautiful thing and spoil it.”
But The Playlist confirms that there will, in fact, be a second visit to Monterey, California. There are no details yet for the next installment, but the fact that it is happening is very exciting for fans.

True to his promise, Vallée will not return to the director’s chair. He will, however, be producing. David E. Kelley, who adapted the book for television, will write the second season, too.

Other questions abound. Which characters will return, and which will have moved on? And how will the events of Season 1 affect them as they go forward?
